I try to find links between images, sounds and emotions. I make it come to life by gathering images, sounds, it comes from a very blurry and abstract starting point and then I elevate my visions, I sculpt them by gathering more images or more sounds, and I try to reach a momentum where all these references together make perfect sense to me. It’s like memories or colors, textures sometimes, a sense of light. As a director I need to see images, ghosts. When developing Run Boy Run, did the project start out as a collection of visual ideas or musical ideas? We spoke to Yoann about combining filmmaking with musicianship and flipping between the two. His latest video, Run Boy Run, was created for one of his own songs and the resulting synthesis of sound and vision is both epically impressive and deeply personal. And it turns out that, as a musician, he has pretty much the same effect on our ears. The live version blew my mind.Don’t we just love Yoann Lemoine? For some time now he’s been a director who has regularly caught our eyes with glints of genius and flashes of beauty. The most memorable songs for me were a new song (so much awesome dancing on the scene and in the audience too!) and Run Boy Run. After all, performing in a small country can be tricky. I think Woodkid and the band too were surprised by the incredibly warm welcome of the audience. I've never ever had this kind of liberating fun, and believe me, I've been to many big name gigs.

Woodkid and his band gave us a memorable. Such talent combined with such live energy is, indeed, very rare. It was like taking part in a fantastical theatrical performance - it was out of this world. I honestly never ever expected to have so much fun. But nothing prepared me for the greatness that was the live show. To be honest, I'd never checked live videos or read reviews beforehand, because the album is in itself very convincing. Woodkid was one of the main reasons why I decided to come to Volt festival. For one moment Lemoine might perform a cover of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” at one of his concerts, and the next give a lecture on classical minimalism with acclaimed composer Philip Glass. The music of Lemoine is multilayered and challenging, which can in part be attributed to his work with a diverse range of musicians. Lemoine supported the album with an aesthetically elaborate visual tour, which made stops at Brixton Academy, the Montreux Jazz Festival, and the Stravinsky Auditorium. The album was a critical success, being described as audacious and technically refined and also landed comparisons to the work of classical revivalists like Antony & the Johnsons. In 2013 Lemoine released his debut studio album “The Golden Age” through the independent record label, Green United Music. The video for this single was directed by Leoine himself and earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Short Form Music Video.

31 on the charts and it’s title track was certified gold. The following year Lemoine issued another EP entitled “Run Boy Run - Remixes”.

The title track became a minor commercial success and was used for the video game “Assassin’s Creed: Revelations”, the movie “Hitchcock”, and the TV show “Teen Wolf”. The list of clients he worked for ranges from pop-divas Katy Perry “Teenage Dream”, Taylor Swift “Back to December”, and Lana Del Ray “Born to Die” to hip-hop/R&B sensations Drake, Rihanna, and Pharrell Williams.ĭuring his time directing music videos Lemoine began dabbling with the banjo and started writing music on his own. To say his catalogue of work is impressive would be an understatement. Though Lemoine landed high profile gigs working on major feature films, he excelled most as a music video director.

Lemoine delved further into film production and went on to direct several roughs for Sofia Coppola’s Marrie Antoinette. This led to his acquaintance with film director, writer, and producer Luc Besson, with whom he worked on the animated feature Arthur and the Invisibles. After he had finished his studies, Lemoine relocated to France and joined the Paris-based graphics and animation company H5. Lemoine progressed to the art of silk screen printing and eventually moved to the UK to take a course on the subject at Swindon College. Lemoine was born 16 March 1983 in Lyon, France and attended Emile Cohl School where he studied animation and illustration. Before that job he honed his efforts in film and fine art. Lemoine had been involved in the music industry for quite some time before he tried his hand at releasing material on his own however, he initially took part in the behind the scenes side of things, producing music videos for other artists.
